Rebuilding the Foundation for
a Healthier, Stronger Smile

Your jawbone plays an important role in supporting your teeth, facial structure, and long-term oral health. When bone is lost due to missing teeth, infection, trauma, or tooth extraction, bone grafting may be recommended to help restore strength and stability in the area.

At Southern Laser Dentistry, we evaluate each patient carefully to determine whether bone grafting is needed and how it fits into your overall treatment plan.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Dental bone grafting is a procedure used to help rebuild or preserve jawbone in areas where bone has been lost or where additional support is needed.

Bone grafting may be recommended after a tooth extraction, before a dental implant, or in areas where the jawbone has become too thin or weak to properly support future treatment.

The goal is simple: create a healthier, stronger foundation for your smile.

You May Need a Bone Grafting Evaluation If You...

Bone grafting is not needed for every patient, but it may be recommended when the jawbone needs additional support for healing, stability, or future tooth replacement.

You are missing one or more teeth

When a tooth is missing, the bone in that area can begin to shrink over time because it is no longer being stimulated by the tooth root.

You recently had or need a tooth extraction

Bone grafting may be recommended at the time of extraction to help preserve the area for future treatment.

Bone changes over time can affect the fit and stability of dentures or partials.

You are planning for a dental implant

Dental implants need healthy bone for support. If there is not enough bone available, grafting may be recommended before implant placement.

Bone loss can happen from periodontal disease, infection, missing teeth, or long-term dental issues.

Why Dose Jawbone Shrink?

Jawbone can change or shrink when it is no longer supporting a natural tooth. This commonly happens after tooth loss or extraction.

Bone loss may also happen because of infection, gum disease, trauma, or long-term denture wear. It does not always cause pain, which is why a proper exam and imaging are important.

Bone loss may also be caused by:
  • Missing teeth

  • Gum disease

  • Dental Infrection

  • Trauma or injury

  • Long-term denture wear

  • Tooth extraction without bone preservation

  • Natural changes over time

Bone loss does not always cause pain, which is why a proper exam and imaging are important.

When Is Bone Grafting Recommended?

Bone grafting is not needed for every patient. It depends on your bone level, the health of the area, your treatment goals, and whether future tooth replacement is planned.

After a Tooth Extraction

A graft may help preserve the socket and reduce the amount of bone shrinkage after the tooth is removed.

Around Areas of Bone Loss

Bone grafting may help support areas that have lost structure due to infection, trauma, or previous tooth loss.

Before a Dental Implant

If the jawbone is too thin or soft to support an implant, grafting may help rebuild the area before implant placement.

As Part of a Larger Treatment Plan

For some patients, bone grafting is one step in preparing for implants, bridges, dentures, or other restorative care.

1

Consultation & Imaging

Your visit begins with an exam and digital imaging so we can evaluate the area, review your bone levels, and determine whether grafting is recommended.

2

If bone grafting is needed, the area is carefully treated and grafting material is placed to help preserve or rebuild bone support.

3

Healing & Next Steps

This process helps create a stronger, healthier foundation for your smile and future treatment options.

Comfort-Focused Treatment

As the area heals, the graft integrates with your natural bone. We will monitor your progress and explain when the area may be ready for the next phase of care.

Building the Foundation for dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to replace missing tooth roots. For an implant to be stable, it needs enough healthy bone around it.

If a patient has been missing a tooth for a long time, the bone may have become too thin or weak to support an implant right away. In these cases, bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement.

This does not mean you are not a candidate for implants. It simply means the foundation may need to be strengthened first.

Is Bone Grafting
Painful?

Most patients are understandably nervous when they hear the words “bone grafting.” The procedure may sound more intense than it actually feels.

Your comfort is a priority. The area is numbed before treatment, and your doctor will explain what to expect before beginning. Some soreness, swelling, or tenderness can happen during healing, but we will provide clear aftercare instructions to help you recover properly.

How Long Does Bone Grafting Take to Heal?

Healing time depends on the size of the graft, the location, your overall health, and the type of future treatment planned.

In many cases, the graft needs time to integrate with your natural bone before the next phase of treatment can begin. If you are planning for a dental implant, your doctor will let you know when the area is ready to move forward.

This is not something to rush. A strong foundation matters more than speed.
